The Tantalizing Void: Love Story Edition

Dear Artiphans,  Whatever your thoughts on Valentine’s Day and whichever way you choose to celebrate (or not to celebrate) the holiday, February 14th still provides the perfect excuse to think about our loved ones...to get a bit giddy over grand gestures and good, old fashioned romance. Love stories weave in and out of the Artiphany ‘characterverse’, from invertebrate affairs to cat couples and doggy dates. Of course they do, because John’s illustrated animal kingdom is a reflection of our own world, our own personalities, our own hopes and dreams. Or, as John explains, “Depicting these animals in a fashion that communicates affection or any emotion has more to do with observing human beings than animals.” “These pictures are a subtle...

First Look: John's New Bird Deck of Cards, "Popinjay"

Dear Artiphans, John is working on a new project: a deck of bird-inspired playing cards which is scheduled to be completed and available for our customers in the spring. Today, we’re sharing a behind-the-scenes story about this work-in-progress, from inspiration to execution. The idea for John’s new deck has been brewing for sometime, and finally became a fully fledged endeavor late last year, when a little birdie whispered in John’s ear (or rather, inbox) that there were bird-lovers out there who’d be mighty interested in a pack dedicated to their flighty friends, and would gobble it up if it was made. So, the intrepid artist set to work...and quickly realized the task was not as simple as he had imagined....

Watch John Draw Artiphany's Favorite Holiday Characters

Dear Artiphans,  It's not often that we get to peer inside the creative process of artists. Usually, the final product is what counts, and the rest remains a secret. ("Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!") That's why we wanted to share with you how John crafts his holiday characters. And we wanted to share this not through words (like the rest of our 'Tantalizing Void' series), but instead through a video of the artist at work.  Snail mail is our favorite kind of mail. And while the holidays are sometimes a heachache (*thank you champagne toasts*), this season of merrymaking brings about a tradition that we at Artiphany still hold dear: sending out cards to thank the...

The Tantalizing Void: Social Knitworking Edition

Dear Artiphans,  There is a warmth to John’s ‘Social Knitworking’ image—currently found on paper and cotton, soon to be found on big, beautiful totes and on lovely, Bone China mugs—that has nothing to do with the fluffy wool pompadours, or with the fuzzy lengths of neatly knitted yarn. The warmth generates instead from the image’s tender portrayal of female friendship (no horns to be seen here) and general feeling of contentment. In this image, in short, John has lit upon a balance that has proven evergreen throughout Artiphany’s evolution: an intimate moment of humanness, blended with wordplay, quiet comedy and the animal kingdom. “Social Knitworking is based on the phrase,” John explains. “Of course, I’ve seen social networking so many...

We Learned A Lot From You About Our Products

Dear Artiphans, Last month, we asked your opinion. We asked, because we value it, but we also knew that Artiphans are busy people—artists, dog parents, human parents, teachers, cat lovers, athletes, CEOs, small business owners. So, when we got the response that we did—nearly 125 fully completed surveys—we were blown away. Thank you to all those who took the time to answer—and in your inboxes tomorrow, you will find, as promised, an extra sweet token of our appreciation.  (For all those who still wish to share their thoughts, just click here!) One thing we’ve learned about those of you who have fallen in love with John’s designs over the years is that you’re a curious bunch. And so, we thought we’d...
